How do you tip hair colorist?

I recently got my color (single process with highlights) and a cut done.

I asked at the counter, how much would be appropriate for a tip, only because I've gone to much less expensive places before (that's why my hair was unhealthy). The receptionist said usually 20% and she figured it out to be $26 for the color and $6 for the style.

So, I paid that amount in tips. My question I guess is, is there a point where you do not consider 20%? In other words, do you do 20% until you get over, lets say $60 or $100? i think it was like $130 or something like that.

What do you do? and what is appropriate? Thanks.

A tip is a tip. You can give 0 or you can give 100. usually 15% is enough for a haristylist. For a 70 dollar haircut I give between 10 and 15.

I got a really bad haircut once and tipped her nothing! But usually, if I get a good haircut (and I ususally do, because I go to a wonderful person!), I'll tip 20%. I'll be a little more generous on holidays and up it to 25%, though.

WTH? $26 tip is extreme. Just so you know, tips are NOT mandatory regardless what hairstylist tell you. They will say they live off tips just like waiters/waitresses but they are over exaggerating %26amp; somewhat expect people to give them big tips just so they can have big money in their pockets. You need to watch out. You should tip whatever you can afford, 20% is NOT mandatory, although that's what they will ask for. I think you over tipped this time. Next time, do like $5 or less depending on your experience %26amp; if they think whatever you give them is not enough or say your cheap, then the hell with them! something is better than nothing plus you got bills to pay at home %26amp; they don't care about that, all they care is about your money, trust me on that, you already paid $130 to get your hair done, How much more money do these people want from you? be smart with your money, unless your filthy rich, you shouldn't be giving your money away like that. $5 tip is enough.
