I'm interested in becoming a makeup/ hair artist for horror movies. any tips on how to get into

The most important thing you will need is a well shot portfolio. Get a good camera and take lots of pics. The pics need to be as clear and well lit as possible. Also show all types of work in your portfolio fantasy, injury simulation, old age, straight make-up and so on.

Practice practice then practice some more.

It's good to pick an area and really study it and be the absolute best at it. You should of course master all areas but having an expertise is help full.

Build a resume by working in local theater, doing disaster drills for hospitals anything make-up related.

Plan on spending lots of time in an area with lots of movies being made such as CA, or NC and SC.

Make a nice professional looking website with pics.

Show your works to various shops. Mail in pics to those that won't see you. Do not expect to get these pics back these are busy people. Don't be frustrated if it takes a long time to find work. It's a very hard job to do and get into.

Schools can be helpful. But self trained artists are highly valued in this creative enviroment.

Well, I would get some people you know and deck them out in the make-up for their costume. Then, be sure to take really cool pics, perferably get a good digital camera, and make a portfolio to store them in, and when going to interviews,be sure to grab them. MAKE IT LOOK PROFFESIONAL. good luck!!!

It's kind of a hands on training thing but there are schools you can attend like the Cinema Makeup School in Hollywood. You should also contact some of the major FX places, like Stan Winston, and see if they have apprenticeship programs

I work with a freelance makeup line and am able to do whatever I want with it. Motives is customizeable so we have people who do commercials, photo shoots, fashion shows, etc. There is training available too.
