Also, I'm thinking of dying it at home. Does anyone have any hair dying tips that would be helpful for me to know.

yeah if you don't have any color in your hair you will not need bleach to lighten your hair but if you do have color in your hair you will. also if you are going to color at home have a friend help you and start an inch away from the root and apply the color to your ends first then apply it to the roots process for another 15 min

and use WELLA colorcharm color. you want a level 5 RED color with violet (like a 5rv) cause when it fades it wont look orange so fast!

Since you are dying it a lighter shade, I would get it done professionally. Since you aren't getting highlights, it shouldn't cost too much. When you dye your hair lighter, they will have to bleach it, and use a toner to get the red color you want, or they would have to strip out the dark before applying the red. If you want that shade exactly, definitely get it done professionally.
